Spread your effort evenly

In any long distance athletic event, it is important to spread your effort evenly across the whole distance. This should be reflected in slower times over the tougher parts of the course.

In the Parish Walk it is foolish to overdo it over the Sloc if you are loosing time (through tiredness) later on.

I think I can just about prove my point with these split times between Rushen and Patrick for the last three years. Look how "steady" Jock Waddington was last year but note his finishing time.

In 1987, I set out a schedule for my brother Martin. It involved covering the uphill miles quite a bit slower. My recollection is that he was just about on my schedule up to Rushen but he powered ahead on the climb to the Round Table. "But I'm good at going uphills" or something to that effect he said afterwards. He failed to finish.

In 1988 Martin went a lot slower over this part of the course. He won.
